Picture this: your cleaning product launches to strong reviews. Three months later, complaints start rolling in — rusty nozzles, dripping triggers, pumps that jam halfway through the bottle. The formula is fine. But the sprayer was never built to survive it.
Most cleaning formulas contain acids, alkalis or solvents that attack standard spray pump components. When the pump fails, the customer blames the brand — not the component supplier. For cleaning brands, chemical resistance is not a “nice-to-have” feature. It is the difference between a product that builds trust and one that quietly destroys it.
How Cleaning Agents Attack Sprayers
- Acidic formulas (descalers, bathroom cleaners) — corrode metal springs and exposed metal parts
- Alkaline formulas (degreasers, ammonia cleaners) — cause stress cracking in plastic components
- Solvent formulas (alcohol disinfectants, paint strippers) — swell and degrade standard NBR seals
Most pumps fail through one of three paths: spring corrosion, seal swelling, or nozzle clogging from chemical residue. Knowing which path your formula triggers tells you exactly which components to upgrade.
Which Parts Fail First
- The spring — the most vulnerable component. Carbon steel rusts quickly; upgrade to 304 or 316 stainless steel for corrosive formulas
- Seals and gaskets — standard NBR swells in solvents; EPDM resists acids, alkalis and bleach; Viton (FKM) handles the most aggressive chemistries
- The nozzle and pump core — material grade determines spray pattern durability and clogging resistance
- The dip tube and bottle contact point — a weak seal here causes slow leaks that ruin packaging and retail shelves
Material Selection Guide
- PP / PE bodies — excellent resistance to most acids, alkalis and household chemicals; the workhorse of the cleaning industry
- All-plastic, metal-free construction — eliminates rust risk entirely and simplifies recycling, a growing preference among EU brands
- Springs — 304SS for general cleaning; 316SS for high-chloride or industrial chemistries such as bleach
- Seals — EPDM for acids, alkalis and bleach; Viton (FKM) for aggressive solvents
Rule of thumb: if your formula has a pH below 4 or above 10, or contains more than 10% solvent, do not ship it with a standard off-the-shelf sprayer. Specify chemical-resistant components from day one.
3 Tests Every Buyer Must Demand
- Chemical immersion test — components soaked in your actual formula at specified concentration, temperature and duration; check for swelling, cracking and rust
- Salt spray test — corrosion resistance of metal parts per ASTM B117; 24–72 hours without visible rust is a reasonable benchmark
- Cycle life test — repeated trigger actuations (10,000–50,000 cycles) while monitoring output volume and spray pattern consistency
If a supplier cannot provide test reports, move on. In a market where one bad batch can trigger a recall, documentation is not paperwork — it is protection.
